Fetish animal carvings are widespread in South West American culture. They gave the owner control and power over the animal, or the reverse, the owner assumed the powers asscociated with that animal or insect. Each animal and insect had its own sphere of influence on human activity, e.g. the dragonfly larvae had water power, the turtle was the earth mother, the badger was medicinal because it could find and dig up the roots of healing herbs, and so on.
